THE WAIT

THE WAIT

A Poem by SHEEMA HUQ
"

POEM

"

  Slight, though, ominous,

self-conscious, motions

reluctant  flinches, restrained

implosions, as the shuttle

engine  expends a vast,

hovering noise, stomach

churns, grasping the seat

handles to exhale breath, to

clumsily re-poise, reticent

though relieved, to finally

abandon land, to leave

following several denigrating,

drawn out, intensive, disturbed,

violations, inflating, heady

tensions, conflating scepticism,

senses over-driven with each

sneeze, shuffle & page turning

crumple, every minute

merged into, brutal

compounding complexities,

second by second

            verged on  crucial,

                               hampering perplexities...

                                        then at last,

                            TAKE OFF!

This was wonderful. It describes the varied emotions one might feel on a first flight; or ANY flight for that matter. My brother is a pilot. He's also an ex Ranger paratrooper who used to skydive but he has a fear of heights. He gets vertigo on a high ladder or in a balcony. It's crazy. But flying doesn't bother him or skydiving...

Very atmospheric. Could cut the tension with a knife. Can taste the lifeless recycled cabin air. Long haul flights are like moving through a world between worlds, a parallell dimension, full of neon lit insomnia. You captured that vividly.

This makes me feel like I'm sitting in the engine is a space shuttle as it begins to wind up, churning its complexities, burning it's fuel, Then that moment of liftoff... Nicely done!!

a big thank you Horizon K
Although, I suffer from anxiety, sitting in a taxiing airplane, is not one of my triggers. For some strange reason, I find it, relaxing for me. Looking out the window and seeing the clouds, below. Go figure, this from a person, with a severe fear of heights.

But, I can understand, waiting is always the hardest part of anything, which you describe masterfully.

Anxiety at its finest. Gotta love those moments and you used powerful words to describe what it is like to have this condition, which can be hard to describe.

good to hear from you, much thanks
this was well described, take off is not pleasant (well i don't think it is anyway!) i thought your description of that clumsy landed plane excellent and that sense of foreboding as it takes off- although it usually turns out OK once you are up there! great use of language and nice original subject. fantastic.
