The Paradox of Giving

The Paradox of Giving

A Poem by Sandra M. McLeod

The Paradox of Giving

There's something she lost which allowed her to gain.
She let go of selfishness and could then see plain.
She had lost her ability to put others first.
Without her identity she was at her worst.

It seems she had journeyed down the wrong road;
She felt an emptiness caused by a heavy load.
A hefty trouble hollowed out her frame -
Hoarding generosity within her was to blame.

Like a self-centered child who looks only within,
She had no opponents yet she still tried to win.
Her meaningless insight kept her blind.
She looked for direction of any kind.

Guidance came from he who loved her from the start.
His words spoke not to her mind, but to her searching heart.
His kind example taught her how to make things right.
Her eager heart heard the truth; her spirit saw the light:

Emotions pass right through you like water through a sieve,
Unless you know to have love you give.
Selfishness makes a loving heart bare -
With selflessness very well will you fare.
