Suckling Sleep

Suckling Sleep

A Poem by w
"

they could be peaceful

"
Excruciatingly intense
and powerfully piercing

was the wailing -

          the high pitched wailing -

that came from the cradle

that was on its side

in the next room.

But only I can hear the wailing now.

Everyone else hears
the infernal sobbing.

There's a ringing
in my head,
but the ringing
didn't replace

the wailing

like I wanted it to.

Now I hear the muffled screaming of discovery

and the muted explosion in front of me

and then the drowning THUMP-THUMP

of my heart

as the

ringing

and the wailing

stop.

But I hear the sobbing until the end.

"the infernal sobbing." That's amazing.

"Now I hear the muffled screaming of discovery
and the muted explosion in front of me
and then the drowning THUMP-THUMP" is great.

Last line is solid. I love the alliteration in the first stanza. Great. No complaints.
