Chapter One

 Before you, I used to have nightmares.  Before you, I jumped at every sound, scared that he had come back.  Before you, I lived in fear.

But then I drove two hours to meet you, the first time I'd driven out of state at 19 years old.  I had met your mom on Craigslist, as she had posted you for a re-home because you dislike children, and she had two and I had none, and refuse to let that change.  I still believe it was love at first sight.  She handed you to me, a warm little body of a young dog, about a year old by her guess.  She helped me load your old toys and food and bowls into my car, and gave you a tearful goodbye.  She loved you, you know.  That's why she did what was best for you, the ultimate sacrifice.

We drove home, you on my lap after you insisted on escaping your car harness and almost causing me to wreck.  But on my lap you were quiet, and calm, and we made the drive back to your new home.  We got there, and I showed you your new yard, our room, the bed I bought you weeks before in excitement.  I took the old green nylon collar off of you, and attached your new buckle collar I had gotten to replace it.  A new collar for a new beginning, and my promise to you that I would love you forever and never give up on you.

It was late, and we soon went to bed.  You immediately chose your spot, the one you still sleep in to this day, laying by my stomach like a little spoon.  I was a bit afraid to go to sleep because of the nightmares and insomnia, but that night, I slept.
