Long Lost

Long Lost

A Poem by Scarlet Opal
"

Dedicated to my friend who passed away last year. He was my first love.

"
Lull my heart steady so I can sleep at last.
Pick away my tears like shards of broken glass.
You left those behind, my long lost friend.
You left me to hurt without knowing an end.

I still hear the call of dead snowflakes drying,
how that wonderment of winter brought our hearts sighing, then crying.
The snow slept soundly, tender and untouched;
its somber cloak spread open to envelop us,
and in there, within its silver bust, we were told to love.

I bet you now hear how swift the grass can grow.
I bet you now know how deep the ocean can flow.
I think of you often, maybe more than I need.
In time, love will fade. Without you, indeed.

Your scent bred itself into the pores of my skin,
curling like fingers to draw out poetry from within--it was a sin.
You stole two kisses as the sun closed its eyes,
the universe heeded us despite our loving lies,
and down there, beneath its godly sight, we were told not to love.

I'm sorry I refused what love you still had.
Time had passed so fast and I still feel so sad.
You're gone and I'm here, still weeping at the stars.
All that could have been now disintegrates the heart.
