it is never a mistake to love

it is never a mistake to love

A Poem by Marie Starr

we walk these stolen lands

our own blood on

our own hands

speaking mostly from hunger

writing mostly from need

dressed in the bodies of women

painted in murals of men

we measure the length of on star's breath

against the loss of one heart's death

balance the bulkiness of belief

against the weight of measured grief

barter two pounds solitude

for one ounce of attention

there is no justice

we don't make daily

in this world

and

it is never a mistake to love

I am personally giving you a WC /Nobel Prize ....for this
with "columbus day "((( Pleeeese))) -right around the corner ...it is even more perfect

"we walk these stolen lands
our own blood on
our own hands"

The way "America" was procured...is shameful...and plays itself out to this day ...in the "American"
mindset....

we have ....colonized...and ...bombarded .... so many cultures ...under the auspice of helping ...only to control..
( straight up ...we have taught too few men to fish)

Our drive and motivation comes from ...and.. goes to ...all the wrong places !

"barter two pounds solitude
for one ounce of attention"

We have to insure twice as much for "self " before we'll agree to a drop for someone else.

Love this...( glad you are back ! )

I am not sure of your perspective on this poem. It starts out talking about a stolen land and blood on our own hands. No doubts in reference to the cost paid for the stolen lands. The transition to hunger and painted in murals leaves me confused, a bit. The overall tonality seems to be from the statements of a woman out of place where she is, feeling responsible or having it thrust upon her. There are things said, artistically nice, that do not connect to the following lines. It is as if there is a piece of the puzzle missing.

Emotively speaking, I like the play of emotions this piece draws out. There are seven stanzas and each one plays to an emotion. I like the emotives penned for this one. They just don't play together well enough for me. My words in no way take away from the emotions stated or felt. The lines seem disjointed from the whole.

No you are right . It's never a mistake to love! But it comes at a high price!

Great imagery, imagination, insight and poignancy... kudos!

Third piece I've read on love this afternoon! I think it is all great, but verses 4-6 are brilliant. And the overall msg is bang on.

I'm glad J Hampton requested for me to read this. Excellent poem, from beginning to end.

***barter two pounds solitude
for one ounce of attention***

I love that metaphor, something that caught my attention. i wrote a line in one of my older poems, "the fear of solitude feels worse than sin..." sometimes we want so much attention, that we are willing to trade anything for just an ounce of it. AWESOME!! going in my favs.

Measure for measure, I would place the weight of these words against any others I've read today. We need to remember the wisdom in these lines well into tomorrow and the day after that. It is never a mistake to love.
