B.Y.O.B. (Bring Your Own Bliss)

A Poem by Marie Starr

Ain’t no shame in your game girl
Men be playing it all the time
Ain’t no crime in your rhyme girl
You just keep trying to get yours
‘Cause you know ,
I’ll be tryin to get mine

Don’t need no reason for the season
Don’t need no false grin upon your chin
Don’t need no man to tell you
how your looking, ‘Cause what you
Got to be is looking in

Ain’t nobody but yourself
You need to answer to and if a man
Be telling you otherwise, you need to be
Telling him you’re through
Ain’t no question you can ask yourself
You ain’t already got
The answer to

Just open up girl
Wade through those lies been piled up
Behind your eyes and recognize

‘Cause you know what’s coming next, girl
Don’t be acting all surprised

It’s just like Mama Lena always said,
“You got it in ya, girl … You got it in ya”

And whatever “it” is for you
You got to find it for yourself
‘Cause nobody else
can find it for ya

Girl, you just got to be
That’s right be

Be in your own body
Be in your own mind

Don’t be sitting there thinking about
What some man think of your behind
Come back up into yourself
and recognize

You are a goddess, girl
You are a queen
Can’t listen to no one else
And what they say they be seeing

You got to see it for yourself, girl
You got to be in your own self, girl
You got to be

A wise woman once said,
“Everyone’s just trying to be happy”
And she’s too true

‘Cause no matter what they do,
Or what they’ve done to you, it all
Comes down to this:

They’re all just trying to be happy
With where they’re going
Trying to be happy with
Where they’re at

We’re all just searching for our own bliss

And you may find it in some man’s kiss
But that’s just fleeting
That just don’t last

What you got to do, is open up girl
What you got to do, is find it in you

Then you carry it with you
And there it is
Wherever you may be

And if you find yourself in some man’s arms,
Succumbed to his delicious, irresistible charms
It will be there too
Because you brought it

But if you keep waiting on someone else
To bring your bliss to your front door,
Be it in a look or a dance or a kiss or
Maybe a little something more
You gonna be waiting a long damn time

And so I wrote for you this rhyme
to be telling you

You are a goddess
You are a queen
You are a woman, girl
And that ain’t no small thing

And no matter what others may say
Or try to say away
You got to bring it with you girl
You got to bring it on

C’mon
Let me hear you say it, now:

I am a goddess         I am a queen
I am a woman                 and that ain’t
no small thing

I am a goddess         I am a queen
I am a woman and                 that ain’t no
small thing

I am a goddess         I am a queen
I am a woman                 and that ain’t
no small thing

Author's Note

Marie Starr
This is an old one that used to be up on this site before it crashed ... as much as I like it, and as much as I've read it, I still feel like it's not quite right ... It's something about the first stanza ... I need a better set-up for it all ... haven't figured it out yet, though ... maybe you can help ...
