Heart Attack Days

Heart Attack Days

A Poem by R. Gene MacDonald
"

About my recent bout with panic attacks. A scary thing indeed. In iambic pentameter.

"

Strongly denied my reason's right, in the

presence of mortality, my heart,

my mind, becomes explosive and distraught.

Fire and burning earth float beneath my wake,

shifting winds and drowning waves swirl untamed.

The sun's life-filled rays hide in starry space.

Dreams and true sleep avoid me, elusive as

a thief. But as my qickened heart threatens

to lead me to cloudless Elysium,

light awakens my endorphins, and I awake

to cycle my eternity again.

VERY powerful piece. I've had my share and have seen my share and there's nothing at all good about panic attacks as far as I can tell. In these times....it's amazing we're not all spinning round caught in panic. I do better when I don't think so much.
I love the imagery and am glad in the end your endorphins came back. Ahhh... but then there's the cycle isn't there? gah.

Excellent write, thanks so much for sharing!!! And may your next attack miss the mark completely and leave you feeling calm and peaceful. Much love~~

Gene MacDonald,
You have lived to tell your story; and what a story! To be able to describe your experience to another is goal worth attaining. I can imagine your experience within your poem "Heart Attack Days." The line, "fire and burning earth float beneath my wake." really placed an immage of molten, burning magma! So let's just say the picture became more real at that point. I hope you do not mind my reading an early writing of your. I have been doing it with other writers as well. This poem had much meaning especially in this time we live. Like your author's note by the way, quite helpful.....................Blessings, Kathy
