She forgot to come back?

She forgot to come back?

A Poem by SleeplessVolcano

I play with a little heap of
Muscovado sugar
On the coffee shop table
While I stare at her soft, empty seat
Clumpy grains of sugary sand
Glistening like her hazel-nut eyes
Sounding as sweet
As a hummingbird's kiss

Maybe she forgot to come back
Because I forgot to love her
Maybe she forgot to seek me
While I was still sitting still
Maybe my mind was drawn to other planets
While she was content with earth
So many what-ifs
So few answers
At least the spoonful
Of sad brown sugar
Still tastes sweet.

The recollection you carry out of events
wondering what could have went wrong
goes to show that you truly couldn't have loved her more

and that is endearing

I love the humbleness of this poem. In this situation, most people would be raging, but here you are, giving the beloved the benefit of the doubt, trying to find answers that don't hurt anyone, but just to enlighten & understand. I love the imagery of coffee & sugar, hand in hand, with more emotional imagery. This poem illustrates the foibles we all play out in relationships. Great share!

Beautiful imagery - until her sweet kiss, brown sugar on the lips is a good start :)

Welcome as always
poignant moment ... your poem draws me in and i feel "those" feelings ... simply wretched to be sitting there in "our" coffee shop ..alone ... with brown sand sugar ... torture to allow the mind to whip thru that whirlwind of what ifs .... glad i'm old ;)

I enjoyed the poem. Deep thoughts and I liked how you used the brown sugar.

Nice one, too. You really know how to use words to create a nice imagery. I have been looking through some of your writings and I really like your writing style. Reminds me a little bit of mine somehow.... Keep on sharing.

Yes, I know. I'm struggling to write anything new at the moment - it's kind of frustating.
