Promise

Promise

A Poem by Spottedleaf
"

It started with a promise I made to a love, the only one I knew I could keep. And wouldn't you know I ended up hurting her in the end.

"

Throughout my life,

I’ve made many promises.

Looking back at them,

I’ve kept very few.

If I had the choice,

More would’ve been kept.

Most of us simply make promises,

Ones we are unable to keep.

Yet I’ve discovered a promise,

The only one that I think I am able to keep.

My promise is,

That I will hurt you.

In some way,

In some manner.

Pain is the only constant,

In our ever changing lives.

I may mean to,

I may not.

And if I promised you this,

Would you still be there?

If you promised me this,

Would I still be there for you?

We could never know,

How it would affect us.

The truth is,

I’m glad I met you.

But I will hurt you,

That is a promise.

But I have another,

I will protect you at all cost.

If I lose sleep,

Even if I bleed.

When I am with you,

You will be safe.

But I can’t promise you that,

Can I?

I will try,

And I may die.

My dear,

You’re worth it.

We could bridge the pain,

We could patch up our scars.

Take these words to heart,

My lovely dear.

For this promise,

It changes your perception,

Of everything you knew or know.

Just never feel empty dear,

For I’m always here for you.

No matter the struggle,

And no matter how far.
