"Showing Off"

"Showing Off"

A Poem by Steven Pottle

Am I attractive to you?
Did an old joke bring you back from the brink
You know that when I say something funny
And you laugh your head off
That you’re actually laughing in the face of the inevitable
You’re forgetting about that cold death
And so you’re living a few minutes longer

Am I a positive force here?
Does my smile brighten your eyes with regular sunshine
These stupid lines are my only currency
And so I spend out on you
Lavishing you with endless sentences
Filling every corner of your space with both the rich and the silly

For I am the village idiot,
The funny lady and the stupid baby
I’ll be the Christmas repeat, mouthed in time and never forgotten
I’m not a real boy anymore
Made with felt for fingers, rod manic moves and a hand for a backbone
I am custard pie faced crying and I am your sides that are splitting
For I am cute and I am kitten
So am I attractive to you?
