Empty Seats

Empty Seats

A Poem by Steven Pottle

The time on the DVD player says that it’s nearly 10 O’clock
Just enough time for one last cup of tea before the caffeine has any effect on my sleep
The TV was switched off hours ago as there was nothing on- just repeats on specially made repeat channels- no more ‘More 4’ for me…

Stomp, stomp, stomp, drag, scrape, bang across the ceiling
The couple upstairs are preparing to move out next weekend
They are trying not to be noisy while packing, but their floorboards says otherwise tonight
Strangely comforting that they have been around every evening this week
I’m going to miss them when they’re gone- I wish we had invited them down more often

Must remember to send an e-mail to thank everyone for the kind cards and gifts
So I’m looking at the old water at the bottom of the vase in my birthday flowers
The sudden cloudy faded yellow water that will eventually kill their pretty petals
I wish we could preserve the beautiful heads without chemicals or attention
And why do I feel like crying when I realise that every flower in the world eventually dies?

As my size 12’s dangle off the end of the sofa, my toes frantically tap away
There is no music on so it’s like I can hear something that no one else can
Something must be wrong- my subconscious is released through my feet
You can tell that I’m secretly anxious with this nervous twitching to a nonexistent beat
I must get up to make that much needed cup of tea
Clicking the kettle on while looking back at where I’ve just been sitting
I reflect: “And when people leave, they leave nothing but empty seats”

I love this, simple yet brilliant. My favorite line is " my subconscious is released through my feet" I love this line, so imaginitive and unique. And the last line about the empty seats is cracking, keep it up buddy.
