Dad Open Your Eyes

a poem about my dad and how hes not being a dad

I want you to open your
eyes and be involved in
our lives

I want you to see what's
really going on

I know your married now,
so I gave you a chance
to get things straight

You stopped driving your
truck and got a new job

When we are with you, it's
hard sometimes

We have been waiting for
things to get better, but
they haven't

We have been waiting for
you to be our dad again

We tell you things that we
want, but there not just things
we want, there things that
we need

We need you

We need to be able to have
one on one time with you
once in a while

There are so many things
that we need you for

I have been so scared to tell
you how I feel, but now it's at
the point were I need to tell
you how I feel

Dad, I am fine with the marriage
thing

The only thing that's out of place
is you being there for us

Your pushing us away and treating
us like we don't exist when we are
with you

I love you, but this is how I feel and
what I have to say

I am asking  you to open your eyes
to see what's really going on in front
of you

Love you dad with all my heart, but
please just be there for us and
understand how we feel

Author's Note

I am having a really hard time with my dad right now. He seems like he doesn't care how my brother and I feel about things. It's hard to even talk to my dad when I'm around him because I don't know what to even say to him. That's badly I hurt right now, with my dad being like this.

A hard place to be indeed, a painful one as well. Being a father myself who's children are half a country away and not being able to spend much time with them, while trying to get my new life together... I know how it effects my girls. I suspect your dad doesn't know what to say either. My guess is he is very aware of the tension and turmoil. I can make the assumption that he's trying to focus on his new marriage and depending on the will power of the new wife, it can be blinding.
Best suggestion I could offer is to keep letting him know you love and support him and his new wife. If his new wife sees the support, it may make it easier for the father to remember that life is always about balance and he needs to find that balance between old and new.

A hard piece to share, but good to put out there, for many can relate.
