Gavin's Easter Surprise

Gavin's Easter Surprise

A Story by T.B. Odin

Gavin
And the
Easter Surprise

You know the idea of Easter is strange even a funny thing.
Colored eggs and the rabbit that hides them each spring.
Something funnier is the chocolate and toys.
The candy filled baskets left for each girl and boy.

Yes, each girl and boy.  That’s what Gavin was told.
But the best thing about Easter was the egg colored gold.
Yet this day was different for a true gift was hidden away.
Gavin would learn the true meaning of Easter day.

You see, he had questions since he was new to this whole Easter thing.
So he picked his dad’s brain while he colored eggs red, blue and green.
“Why is there only one special egg to be found this day?”
Dad answered, “All eggs are special in their own little way.”

“Well, why only one gold egg?   Please tell me why.”
“Well if you must know there are golden coins inside.”
“Where lives this bunny?  Where does he go?
Please tell me dad.  Do you know?  Do you know?”

Dad gave him a smile that seemed kind of silly.
“I don’t know where he lives.  I’m not sure really.”
“How does he carry all the baskets filled with the things we enjoy?
He has but two hands dad, how can he do this for each girl and boy?”

Dad thought hard as he tied Gavin’s shoe.
    “I don’t really know, I haven’t a clue.”
“Do you think he has a sack like Santa Clause?
A sack over his shoulder held with his paws.”

Dad smiled for Gavin who was very clever.
But he had an answer that just might be better.
“I thought really hard.  I don’t even know.
Perhaps in each yard he has a magic burrow.”
Gavin liked that answer, because rabbits were fast.
His little mind raced for more questions to ask.
Dad opened the door and out in the yard,
Gavin saw eggs of all colors hidden near and far.

Excitement fluttered in his wee little heart.
He snatched at his basket, “Where do I start?”
Family and friends each with a smiley face,
Lined the fence ready to race.

“It looks kind of scary dad.
    I don’t want to go.”
“I promise it will be fun.
    This I do know.”

Dad patted his head and wiped away his frown.
“Now go by your sister and wait for the whistle to sound.”
With a smile he added, “Don’t push or shove and remember to be nice.
Grab each egg that you can and don’t think twice.”

At the sound of the whistle, kids ran everywhere.
Gavin got eggs of all sizes from here and there.
After a while all the eggs were gone.
Then everyone heard the cheerful song.

“I found the egg.  The one colored gold.
Look dad look, look what I hold.”
Gavin stood by his dad as his sister came near.
She had a golden egg in her hand and a heart full of cheer.
“It’s mine.  It’s mine and there is money inside.
Look dad look.  What can I buy?”

Gavin’s face grew sad and a tear came to his eye.
“I wanted the gold egg with the treasure inside.”
His sister knelt down.  In her hand was a coin like no other.
“This golden dollar is yours Gavin, for you are my brother.”

With a hug and a kiss his eyes lit up wide.
“Look what I got dad, a golden egg prize.”
Dad hugged them both with a kind smile in his deep blue eyes.
“I’m proud of you two.  What an Easter surprise.”

Gavin dumped out his basket and stared at the eggs.
He looked to his dad with an idea of all Easter days.
“This day is special not for an egg colored gold,
But for the friends and family who love me, to share with and hold.”

Dad gave him a smile and held out his hand.
“You are so smart son, my big little man.”
Together they went to show papa and nanny
All his colored eggs, plain and fancy.

So you see Easter day is much more than we thought.
Filled with things that can not be found or bought.
Gavin learned sharing and the importance of family and friends.
The love that he knows has no bounds or ends.
