I'm keeping my eyes open -

Both of them…

There’s a rumbling, there’s a stirring

There’s a thickness in the air;

A buzzing of expectation,

Buzzing everywhere…

There’s an uneasiness,

A tension

Not of words -

There is no mention

And there is no articulation

Of this dreadful trepidation

That hovers somewhere just beyond words

And hangs thick upon the world…

It’s not the ominous warnings

Emanating from science,

Of strange and terrible fears

Nor the star-gazing Mayans’

Doomsday that draws ever near.

It is the wars and rumours of wars;

The empty granaries of the farmers

It’s the suffering, the depravation

Not ciphers from Nostradamus…

It’s like the gathering of the clouds,

The thunder before the rain

The world groans, as if in labour;

Groans and creaks from the pain…

We go about our business

Obliviously, while

The expectant world is trembling

And moans in its travail.

Above the clouds are gathering

Like the shroud upon a pyre -

Heavy with expectation, their precipitation

Is cleansing, and judgment, and fire.
