No Lifeguard on Duty

No Lifeguard on Duty

A Poem by Kiara

It's almost as if someone just died.
I feel more numb than sad.
Mainly, I'm just tired,
Tired and left with stinging eyes.
I spent half the night trying to convince you
I was okay.
I'm not okay
And I don't care.
I care as little as you do.
I just hope you're happy now.
You've left me to decay.
Where there was light in me,
A darkness pulls me deeper,
Deeper into the lake,
Deeper into the unforgiving ocean,
Buried beneath the waves.
No lifeguard on duty.
No one can hear me scream.
No one would want to save me
For fear of endangering themselves.
I didn't want to pull him under
But he tried to save me.
He didn't realize he had to choose--
My life or his.

One may consider this to be a harsh judgement on one person, but another who has been on that duty knows this is not harshness, but reality.
