So That Tonight I Might See

So That Tonight I Might See

A Poem by T. Edana Talbott

I turn all the lights on bright, so that tonight I might see,
A glimpse of you, a glimpse of heaven - even if for just a millisecond.

I grab a camera to catch your beauty, for I know your presence is fleeting,
I sit ‘till dawn, squelch my yawns - awaiting our fateful meeting.

But you never show - I never know, where to look, where to go,
So that someday I might see, the face of you - the face in only dreams.

The next night’s the same, I sit and wait for hours on end.
I watch the television, but the colors blend - it’s only you in my head,
I shut the lights off, put away my camera as night burns to day.

And who do I see in my bedroom doorway?
My glimpse of serenity.

You smile a smile never seen before and whisper,
“My dear, you await no more.”

Then, in a blink of an eye, you’re gone - heaven is out of sight.

The next night, I did not stay up, so that I might see,
A glimpse of you, a glimpse of heaven - even if for just a millisecond

For I got my wish, I was not ditched - you showed with an angelic glow.
And I can always see you each night once I fall asleep...

There are certain people in our lives who make everything feel right (I'm not referring to a lover in particular), so when we're not with that person, our mind begins to think of them all the time -- even in the most awkward of moments. I think the phrase "even if for just a millisecond" really captured the feeling of wanting to see someone -- just the smallest moment with them would be, as you've described, heaven. Well done.

You are very welcome. :)
Such a beautiful thought, to wait up for them, only to see them fully in your dream. They do say they only come around when you stop looking, maybe that is the secret.
I love the build up to this, the camera, you yawning, struggling to stay awake, and when you lose that struggle, there they are. Beautifully written.
