Jisei Death Poems

Jisei Death Poems

A Poem by The Dudeman (Kenneth T)
"

I wrote a few Japanese-style death poems. I don't expect to die soon, but the idea seemed interesting.

"
My night comes too soon
But surely the sky won't fall
Upon those I love

Like a summer rain
The sky crashes down on me
Touching no one else

Blossoms leave my sight
As I stand ready to face
Heaven, Hell, or Void

A summer sun sets
But it is not extinguished
Tomorrow will rise.

Author's Note

The Dudeman (Kenneth T)
These poems follow a 17-syllable haiku format. I did a little bit of research on Japanese death poems and haiku in general and learned a few things. Death poems almost never directly mention death, using euphemisms such as falling leaves and blossoms instead. They also generally mention the season of one's death, which I did in all but the first poem (Implicitly done in the third by mentioning blossoms, a traditional picture of spring).

A beautiful poem about death. Death is a topic few do understand and all of us will face one day. I like the gentle and kind thoughts in this poem. A excellent poem.
