The Desert

The Desert

A Poem by TheJordBaker

My mind burns under the midnight sun.
It began, but it ended too soon. I run
deeper into the desert, to forget who I am.
The rays beat down like only torture can
but my memories are always home.
They grind my heart on scabrous stone.

My name- can I forget it and my past?
Torch it to burn right here in the sand?
With all that you said to me that night in yours.
Loneliness stands by like he knows the score.
The urban resplendence tells me I don’t.
I’m standing alone on substantive stone.

Skyline domes over, the Earth spins round.
It always does. And I know that I’ll find out
the desert is escape. But in reality
as sure as I see that in front of me
sparrows' wings clip halos of lamposts-
We built this love on stalwart stone.
