perpetuity

While considering a name, stepping out
into the cool of an evening,
Aristotle ponders the fate of Ptolemy.

Off in the realm of his eyes, locks of hair
are still auburn amid indigo backdrop skies.

He sips a coffee, crushes a cigarette,
and checks his email
while deliberating the integrity of priests.
Wonders,  'perhaps if a comet were as beautiful as her,
there she would stay...
a constellation softly twinkling
among the likes of Leo the lion and Virgo the virgin.'

He searches through his inbox
to find an old letter Berenices wrote
insisting that love would last beyond the war,
and thus her locks are so dimly lit .

It spoke of love in gaping infinity
a deal made with a god,
a returning hero,
and a war that allowed them bloom.

Tapping at the keys, a letter emerges
and another cigarette finds his lips.
Aristotle is writing history under a street light
on a Dell tablet he purchased on E-Bay
to last in eternal fashion.

I found during my research on the constellation Coma Bernices a minor discrepancy about the hair color of Queen Berenice II of Egypt. Some say it was auburn while the link I included to it says it was blonde. I preferred auburn for this poem.

Cheers!

I'm impressed Xavier, my friend. You researched the constellation Coma Bernices all for the purpose of writing this incredibly beautiful poem. That fact alone adds tremendous weight to the rating I was already going to give you. Beautiful. You add a realism to every poem you write. It is refreshing. 100/100. Keep writing. I need a daily fix.

I'm sure I will regret saying this for some reason are another, which is my huge problem is I have a tendency not to be quiet when maybe I should. I'm not this way all the time but I am about things I feel strongly about or maybe I feel like you are somebody I could say this too...nah, I'm going to say this in private :). Your poems, I could literally read all day. Have you considered writing a book? You too, are one of my top twenty favorite poets. Your poems have such a soothing quality while packing such down to earth tones while maintaining such an air of excitement.

Thank you Brittany. This was my first attempt incorporating anachronistic elements.
Very unusual and very cool! I think you are a gifted writer who sees in complexities we most of us don't normally concentrate on! But I love the idea of the constellations of Leo orVirgo to make the beauty of this come through!

My friend, this is an eclectic mix of thoughts, ideas and visions that could only come from your pen. I really enjoyed where this took me, back and forth as if via a wromhole spanning the space time continuum. Very, very cool.

Thank you, Jack. :)
i must say it is so considerate of you to post that link for those of us who don't know mythology or astronomy and save us from the frustration of researching it on our own. it is a touching story of a queen who beseeches the goddess of love for the safe return of her king in exchange for her hair; a prized asset. an offering that became the symbol of their love eternally etched among the heavens of the sky. your erudition is boundless, dear.
