Suppose There Is No God?

Suppose There Is No God?

A Poem by Rocans
"

Playing the devil's advocate here. Not an atheist and I don not necessarily share the views expressed.

"

There is no god

No manufactured figure in the sky for Providence

To protect from the ravages of the erratic universe

No soul to save through religion

No afterlife engineered by men with morbid phobias

No solace after death I say to the blind who lack foveas

No rendering of the tomb ephemeral

 With clauses of cloistering scripture

Promising lift-off to another plane

Entrapping one within words

Rendering itself impervious to the scrutiny of logic

Authenticating itself by nothing but its own verses

Inculcating fear with curses, Armageddon and an invincible Hell

There is no hope for heavenly nor hellish immortality

Invented by men to preserve their essence

No sinister resurrection of human skeletons for raptures

No insurrection of strange beasts of apocalypse our lives to fracture

An end might be imminent but I doubt any supernatural fallacies

Dreamed up by men who follow after their fancies

With childlike obeisance; stuff of fairy tales and necromancy

The peaceful grave awaits us all

To laugh at them who dare escape its snare

Never has anyone even struggled against her sensual hold

We humans construct places in ether

Or perhaps in other dimensions

To preserve our frailty within the impersonal machinery of the cosmos

Having no idea the way death taunts us with each step

At any moment…any second life can be cut

By virulent variables beyond our control

Beckoned into the shade of oblivion

Where consciousness is no more

Awareness evaporated like the blood from corpse

Bones the last resistant bastion of life

Reduced to dust particulates

And your skull articulates blank smiles

A mere shell whose life has been subsumed into Mother Earth

Left to the mercy of the Father.... Time

The immortal, ruthless vulture

Without God there is no hope
There is only self,
why do good, why be good
Without God we just live to self
To kill the unborn child
to starve the elderly in hospital, ironic
divorce at a whim and do untold harm
to our children. Without God we lead
debauched lives and spread diseases

Without His love there is just madness
and ruin. God is love and offers out
His hand, to worship Him forever.

You wrote this poem in 20 minutes, it shows.

I walked the path you've painted in this well written poem, but through my own experiences the images changed for me. :-)

Imagine there's no heaven... no hell below us... imagine all the people living for today...

Your verses made me think of these iconic lines; why do we need God to "make" us behave?

"To preserve our frailty within the impersonal machinery of the cosmos..." Excellent line... and, God or no, Time is indeed a ruthless vulture. Amazing insights, Rocans.

Thanks Rita. Indeed it would be a different world if we were all living for today.
Whether there is a higher power or not has been up for debate since the idea took hold. No one really knows and so we search for proof when dogma is not enough to quench our need to know. You propose your ideas quite nicely throughout the poem and I was especially struck by these lines:

We humans construct places in ether
Or perhaps in other dimensions
To preserve our frailty within the impersonal machinery of the cosmos
Having no idea the way death taunts us with each step

Thanks icelandicblue, I appreciate your insight and the read.
Of course any suppositional hypothesis is, as a human, self-fulfilling, that it (God) is real and true
by virtue of having been the prophecy of expectation. In other words, faith to the true
believers in God is so unlike the muse that governs poetic inspiration. One you dare not
dismiss, the other you can choose to disallow. Degrees of belief? You betcha. I can't quote
any biblical scriptures but I like the sound it makes when other people do it...lol

It must have taken you forever to write this, which according to my dysfunctional charge,
would kill my train of thought. After writing the first stanza I would have taken
an extra long Bosco break. But you are young and strong and a tremendous writer.

well done.
