Inspiration

Inspiration

A Poem by Tom English

Inspiration doesn't come to those who try to find it
Doesn't come to those of riches
But to those who are too broke
Doesn't come to those of love
But those who've lost love
Doesn't come to successes
But of failures
Silent nights when the content are sleeping
And those still up worry that sleep might be lost times to find it
Standing in the cold with no jacket
In the rain with no umbrella
In the times with no watch

Inspiration doesn't come
It's waiting
Waiting for you to be lonely and lost
Left out and locked up
It comes to those with no voice
It stays in them and dies with them
Inspiration is an art
And it destroys everyone who joins it

Inspiration is the quiet settling house
where you pretend you're a ghost
and everyone can hear how quiet you try to be

Inspiration is the last ditch effort of a man
Who lost it all when he has no clue what it all is

Inspiration is a demon no man should seek

Although I do not agree with you 100%, this is still a great piece. It clearly marks the schism between those of us who write and those who don't. I agree that inspiration does not come -- it's something you have to catch, running after it with a butterfly net. I used to get great ideas for poems driving home from the job in the evening. I would repeat the words over and over until I could get home and write them down. And I also agree with the last line; demons should never be sought, for once you find a demon, he is with you always.

"Silent nights when the content are sleeping." Love this line. I'm going to reread this when I'm up at 3 am writing!
