Mt Hood's Mysterious Forest

Mt Hood's Mysterious Forest

A Poem by Tina Kline

Lingering in this deep forest

Where shadows unfurl

Ravens wing amongst the trees

Small Douglas Firs unfurl

Mt. Hood hovers over all

Casting a majestic presence

Through the trees slips a deer

Suddenly it is hovering there

Small birds twitter high above

Radiating earthward is the sun

Hear the winds gently sigh

Gurgling somewhere is a stream

Yet the roar of the river is nearby

Lingering deep in this mysterious forest

Where shadows are stretching far

One of a kind yet not unknown

A single life stretching out to the stars

I love the focus on elemental nature. I also enjoy the sbasence of any of us in the poem. The mountain, as do all mountains, put we tiny creatures in our place. What are we to a Douglas Fir ... is all our frantic rushing around more worthy of life than the statuesque silence of a Douglas Fir? Is the entirity of human life and intelligence of any importance to Mt Hood? We are nothing to nature and lucky if we realise it.

Deep forests always seem very mysterious for me. Sometimes I get a feeling a Big Foot is going to step out from behind a tree and startle the heck out of me!
