Wisdom's Gate

Wisdom's Gate

A Poem by Keith Jeffries
"

The benefits and qualifications of wisdom as a virtue.

"
Wisdom's Gate

A mature mind is where thoughts permeate,
a place where wisdom comes to fruition.
Experience, knowledge and perception flourish,
as the ingredients of foresight do collate.

We garner much of life through our senses,
as we blossom and create lives of value.
We have trodden the path, a well worn way,
to encompass life's boundless mysteries.

With roads travelled and oceans traversed,
we ponder on each twist and turn.
Does wisdom open a gate to eternity?
as our baggage is both heavy and costly.

Not as bystanders do we gaze afar,
but with hearts and minds of scrutiny.
Our memories are our eternal identity,
the guarantee of our earned fidelity.

An excellent write Vicente. One that speaks to our learned wisdom and the paths in life we travail. In our advanced years we come to understand it is never about the destination of life's road, but the unforgettable journey upon it. And in the end its brevity in the light of all things. I remember in 3rd grade I had made a good friend named Steven. We often played as children do and spoke of dreams in which we saw ourselves becoming later in life. And I remember my friend saying before the summer break that we would see each other soon. A month and a half later he had passed after being struck by a drunk driver while playing in the street. I'm 57 now and still remember my friend. What mystery is life that I should continue it while he did not. There is an answer filled with wisdom but lacking in comfort to the heart. CLE

Your poem is a beautiful reflection on the way that wisdom and experience can shape our lives. The way that you describe a mature mind as a place where thoughts permeate and wisdom comes to fruition is particularly striking, and it speaks to the idea that wisdom is something that is earned through experience and reflection. The contrast that you draw between the well-worn path that we have all trodden and the boundless mysteries of life is also very powerful, and it speaks to the idea that while we may never fully understand the world around us, we can still find meaning and purpose in our lives. The final lines of the poem are particularly poignant, as they suggest that our memories are our eternal identity, and that they serve as a guarantee of our earned fidelity.

Wisdom comes with age, or so they say. I'm still trying to figure out the maze before me, the roads that have paved my way to where I am now. I see life as a puzzle. I think my box is a few pieces short, but I'm determined to bring it to its fruition. Day by day.

Thank you for a good read, Vicente. Nice to meet you!
