The River

The River

The River

As I went down in the river to pray
Studying about that good ol' way
And who shall wear the starry crown?
Good Lord show me the way!

Down at the river

Children aren’t crying

Down at the river

No one is lying

No one is different

We all are the same

Here at the river

There is no one to blame

O sisters let's go down
Let's go down, come on down
O sisters let's go down
Down in the river to pray

Come down to the river

And bathe at the shore

The water from here

Could stop even war

There will be no more suffering

And no more pain

Come down to the river

And dance in the rain

As I went down in the river to pray
Studying about that good ol' way
And who shall wear the robe & crown?
Good Lord show me the way

The most unhappy of man

Will know only joy

And carefreeness

Like he felt as a boy

Come down to the river

It welcomes all of mankind

Peace and serenity

Are what you will find

O brothers let's go down
Let's go down, come on down
Come on brothers, let's go down
Down in the river to pray

The water is clear

The current gentle and cool

Leaving troubles behind

Is the only rule

God is looking down on us

Smiling wide

This river is made

From the tears he has cried

As I went down in the river to pray
Studying about that good ol' way
And who shall wear the starry crown?
Good Lord show me the way

Walk through the river

Sing and rejoice

Please come to the water

It is your choice

Listen to the rapids

As you lie on the sand

While thy mother and father

Walk hand in hand

O fathers let's go down
Let's go down, come on down
O fathers let's go down
Down in the river to pray

The water brings life

Hear at the stream

And the river will continue

To be a heaven sent dream

But no one is sleeping

There is too much to see

From the cross on the donkey

To the dove in the tree

As I went down in the river to pray
Studying about that good ol' way
And who shall wear the robe and crown?
Good Lord show me the way

Here at the river

You will never be alone

People are kind

And are gentle in tone

You will always be loved

You will always be cherished

Here at the river

Evil has perished

O mothers let's go down
Come on down, don't you wanna go down?
Come on mothers, let's go down
Down in the river to pray

Let your long flowing hair

Blow in the breeze

Here at the river

Surrounded by trees

The birds are calling

The flowers grow

The buck prances along

Next to the doe

As I went down in the river to pray
Studding about that good ol' way
And who shall wear the starry crown?
Good Lord show me the way

The river can cleanse

Make you anew
come repent your sins

It’s up to you

Submerge in the water

Wash them away

Come thou child

It’s a new day

O sinners, let's go down
Let's go down, come on down
O sinners, let's go down
Down in the river to pray

Come to the river

If you cannot cope

Come to the river

It offers hope

Come pray with me at the river

And remember this poem

My child the river

Will lead you home

As I went down in the river to pray
Studying about that good ol' way
And who shall wear the robe and crown?
Good Lord show me the way

Voice, It is very nice to read with gentle tide in the river!

It never ceases to astound me, the wisdom I find here, and in such young people to boot! This is a lovely poem, gently querying so many of mankind's issues with religion, and/or God, and as gently answering them, with the same answer: PRAY! Sister, Brother, Father, Mother, why can't we just put our differences aside, and come together, and admit we might not be the highest order in the Creation, and ask for help from some as-yet-to-be-determined Higher Order? Beautiful, beautiful thought, Carol. A sure Favorite!
Two trivial notes: You may wish to change Piece to PEACE (and serenity), and Thy to THOU (child).
