The Eternal Quest for Knowledge

The Eternal Quest for Knowledge

A Poem by

A young girl stands in the dark,

In a shadow covered room.

As she traces rows and rows

of books far beyond her room.

The love of all her knowledge

Is like an eternal flame,

Never starting, never ending,

And never ever staying the same.

Now the girl has grown,

And her heart has gotten bruised.

But she still loves all her knowledge,

The one thing that she counts on to always be there.

She walks down the rows and she picks up a book.

Her eyes grow red with wanting

For now she has gotten hooked.

Now this red haired girl is all grown,

They say she’s as smart as she can be,

But she knows that that’s not true.

For the knowledge is all she can see.

It’s almost an addiction,

The quest to know it all,

But she knows that she’s no nearly there.

She’ll never hit that wall.

For even if she lives, until the end of time.

It’s the eternal quest that’s impossible to find.

I both like it and can easily relate to it. You have captured something that perhaps only other reader's and writers feel. My favorite line was "as she traces rows and rows"... most people don't understand that comfort (I have more book cases than tv's so I do). My only criticism is that there were two choices I did not like. They were "she has gotten hooked" and "never hit the wall". The poetry read with a classical formal voice and those felt like modern cliches. Great job though..perfect to me if you rework those two lines :)

I liked this a lot, and actually I wonder what you think of my poems, I wrote a couple about this same subject. Would you be willing to check mine out? (Funny coincidence, my avatar picture actually means "the pursuit of knowledge or wisdom")

Great, since we're all always gaining knowledge. Though it's not just limited to book learning, which seems to be forgotten in this. But overall, I like it.

I really like the first stanza because it flows well and the rhyme is very effective. Only pet peeve of mine is you used the word "room" twice 2 lines apart.
The rest of the poem I find very chronological, as I think was your intent. You make a very good point, there is always more knowledge out there. No one can know it all, but there are many who possess that hunger for more. All in all, nice job!
