Mannequin

Mannequin

A Poem by Selena Uptain
"

A man is driven to insanity by beauty so fair, but that which he loved no life was there.

"

Mannequin

My lovely doll is standing there.

With ivory skin and silken hair.

Her lips are full and red as a rose.

Such elegant features, a sharp little nose!

How I long to hear her voice!

It would fill my heart with joy.

She stares at me as I touch her cheek

“Why, my dear, do you never speak?”

She doesn’t answer, just continues to stare.

I brush back a lock of her hair.

I turn away and clasp her hand.

Such a fragile little hand!

“Please Cherie, just one little word!”

It’s though my pleading she never heard.

She never moves and never blinks.

It pushes my sanity to the brink.

I pull away and scream in rage.

And pace like an animal in a cage.

“Say something!” I shout, but she doesn’t respond.

I’m consumed by my fury, all sanity gone.

I slap her hard across her cheek.

Her head snaps back with a creak.

I slap her over and over again.

My hands grow numb from the splitting pain.

I sink in exhaustion at her feet.

I clasp her hand and start to weep.

I gaze up and meet her eyes.

Still she smiles, oblivious to my cries.

“I’ll do anything my dear, anything you ask.

Just end this pain for me at last!”

And then an idea enters my mind.

“You deny me still? I shall no longer be kind!”

I slide my knife from its sheathe.

In madness’s grip, I hear her breathe.

I press the blade to her wrist.

And draw it quick, a bloody kiss.

I see the blood stain her dress.

But she speaks no more or less.

I stab her over and over again.

But she doesn’t cry out in pain.

I watch the blood drip down her cheek.

She continues to smile and doesn’t speak.

“Why do you mock me?” I cry in disgust.

Whilst slicing my arms, permeating the room with the scent of rust.

I’m on my knees at her feet.

She continues to smile so mockingly.

“Is this what you want?” I scream whilst tearing at her skirt.

My blood soaks into the fabric and I say, “You have no idea how much this hurts.”

I plunge the blade into my eyes.

Still she doesn’t hear my cries.

And then she laughs so musically sweet.

As I lay bleeding at her feet.

And then I kiss her one last time.

As the life drains from my mind.

And with that kiss my fate is sealed.

Her blood-soaked skirt the last I feel.

Wondering if it was even real.
