Simply Fab

Simply Fab

A Poem by Zoe Richardson

Ghosts of New Years Past

"

Simply Fab

How strange for me to be back here

At the turning of the year

When I only wished to be with you

And dreamed of all the things we’d do

I dreamed of ice and winter’s chill

Twinkling skies and deeper still

Kisses shared on New Years Eve

A promise made and thus believed

The sound of lights and music played

Counting down to that last day

When you would sing and I would dance

And snowflakes laced the air with chance

Smiles that graced me as I whirled

You played the songs that made our world

Smoky rooms and loud guitars

The cymbal crash of scattered stars

Shadows claimed me all year through

But New Year’s Eve belonged to you

A time to meet, to touch, to claim

And wait for you to give your name

Now you and I have passed away

The evening stretches into to day

While I am chasing memories

Of all that was and couldn’t be

I cannot help but sit and wonder

What was the spell you put me under

The loved that blessed and cursed my days

Are New Year chapters tucked away

While I dance this New Year’s Eve

I lift a glass and drink to me

And as the old year turns to new

I lay to rest my dreams of you

The name of my late husband's first Beatles tribute band was Simply Fab, and our first "date" was one of his gigs. Every New Year''s Eve until we married I would make the 900 mile trek to northern Illinois for these gigs.

And if I may ask, which Beatle did your husband portray?
I simply loved your poem, the flow, the rhyme and the emotions. It was sad, all along it was laced to the past. Memories of better times I think and the sadness that loss presents. Beautifully crafted. I loved the title as well. I believe George wrote a song titled "When we was fab" as a tribute to the bad and it was one of my favorite tunes by him. It played in my head as I read this.

Such a fine write, carefully placed, time, place and comfort set to be seen and felt with joy. But, as sad as only you knew and always will. Such a special and beautifully set stanza,

'Smiles that graced me as I whirled
You played the songs that made our world
Smoky rooms and loud guitars
The cymbal crash of scattered stars'

There are so many lines of more than not in this lovely if sad love poem. Because that is what it is at the centre of its very large heart.

I really liked your last stanza. Reminds me of my ex husband. May he rest in peace now.
I wish I could've helped him out, but I was going through my own nightmares at the time.
This is a powerful read, tugs too.
