Ode to Modern Life

Ode to Modern Life

A Poem by Zoe Jay

Everyone sees a different colour
A million minds diverging

Twisted point of view

Might prevail

The revolutionaries are no more

Nobody is fighting the tide

Riots in small villages

World has died

Tax the rich and feed the poor

The concrete cube people

So let them eat cake

Money funnel

Try to live well with this filth

Scrub all the stains away

Close your minds

Head held high

Society is sick

Humanity sold out

End of the road

Nothing but pain

Our fate caught us

We love the lucre

Now we will pay

Worship false gods

And nuke the dirt

Hell is bliss and study is wasted

Learning won’t end this war

Shoot the educators

Burn the books

So we whored out our future

Now pregnant with sin

Burn the temples

Kill the seed

Advertise God on the gate of hell

Sell the key to good faith

Make some dollars

Forget the cents

Hunt the witch and heal the wound

Clean out your guilty soul

Judge and you are free

Fear rules now

Retarded evolution

So proud of ourselves

Bacteria on the rock

Breeding out love

Not noticing the rust

Outrun the plague

Sell some more s**t

And buy another tart

Gild your little nest

Monsters who live down your street

Little girls wearing lycra skirts

Politics will save us all

Legislate for death

Car crashes that spill out your guts

Metal towers poison your head

Nicotine in your lungs

Titanium dreams

Children nourished on chemicals

People drown in indolent fat

Babies dying in corridors

War in the desert

Throw away your magical beans

Watch your life hit the street

Running into the cracks

Dying alone

Heritage is lost

Respect is dead

Anarchy rules

Law of the jungle

Fight the threat

Forget our demons

Lose the way

Repair the roads

Drive faster or die

Vote the right way and it’ll go away

While the honest fear the law

The devil rules the street

Handgun escape

Visit the cemetery to see your son

Go uptown and see your dealer

Your mum at the asylum

Seek forgiveness

Ask favours from a God you don’t fear

Violence in the name of peace

Stab the beautiful b***h

Run away to hide

Achieve true justice through revenge

Treat those symptoms hard

Hide away the cause

Inside your soul

Such a bleak picture of the world you've painted here. Is there no hope? It's bleak, but it is accurate and honest and very well said. As I read it, I felt myself dressed in the rags of the homeless, shuffling slowly down the street and observing it all first-hand on all sides of me. That's how vivid your visuals were for me. It actually made me feel quite hopeless. Terrific poem.

An in depth portrayal of what should be so evident to the masses....which probably is but "society is sick, humanity sold out"
I dont understand how we've become such complacent cowards. Afraid to challenge the blatant injustices ...well you know.
I watch other countries revolt over election processes and I'm embarrassed...embarrassed at bieng embarrassed

Man, another amazing piece. I am not easily impressed with writing as it is usually all the same simple stuff and it gets old fast, but this is actually thought-provoking. This is really good. It is so true.

. you're an immensely intelligent rocket ... and i'm amazed at the sheer genius, passion and fearlessness with which you have crafted this impeccable mind map of the maze ... almost all of us are consumed by ... without even realizing most of it perhaps ... and as you inch towards your raison d'être ... you take the reader with you ... a lot needs to be done ... and i see a better future for the world ... if poetry is more mainstream than politics ... it's probably a dream i'll die with ... but as the wise often say ... some dreams live beyond the dreamer ... this poem screams out that dream solution for a better world ... it resounds and resonates ... it is unapologetic ... and most importantly ... it inspires me ... thank you for this ...

. there's a place called kalahandi in india ... where farmers a suffering and everyone knows that ... all the corporates who are into corporate social responsibility initiatives ... all the politicians ... and especially all the journalists ... but no one does a thing ... i think the first thing is to be aware ... to even begin to think about what can be done and how ... and i simply made one promise to myself ... that i'd think of kalahandi every day ...

. as you might know ... Mahatma Gandhi is the father of our nation ... and in school ... we had books ... and on the inside page of the cover ... would be printed his talisman ... which said that ... if you're ever in doubt about what to do ... think of the poorest person you know and see if your action is likely to benefit him in the future ... this poem will benefit a lot of people ... who suffer from different kinds of poverty ... especially ... (and by no means limited to) ... the poverty of clarity of thought about the world we find ourselves in ...
