The Corner Bar

The Corner Bar

A Poem by Abby Abramowitz

They are loud and they are drinking.

Their thoughts become dark like the clouds when the sky threatens rain.

Each person has a name but when the beer is flowing, after knocking back a few, names mean nothing.

The salty bitter taste of the drink is what becomes important.

While the night is young, they order the brew with gusto and diligence.

Drinking so fast, they need to forget the day.

Once the clouds of dread blanket their mind, the reality of life becomes moot and people become things.

Time has no meaning.

Drinking is the only thing of importance.

In a bar, on the corner, only the brew is their friend.

They are lonely and have no one in their lives to love so they sit and drink and try to keep their hope alive by getting drunk.
