Higher Self

There is a beat in my heart
That wants to run faster than the rest
There is a thought in my mind
That recurs more often than the rest
There is a wish within me
That stands much taller than the rest
There is a nerve within me
That makes me livelier than the rest
And if I pay heed to those pieces
Instead of the rest
Certainly I will find a self in me
Much Higher than the rest.

We do indeed need to "listen" to those pieces of ourselves that spur us forward to be "better". Freud suggests this is called the id, ego and super-ego respectively. The id is the unorganized part of our inner self, while the ego attempts to placate the id or mediate between the id and reality, and the super-ego is the part of us that aims for perfection. Your piece is a reflection of the super-ego trying to spur forth your id into realizing that it needs to listen a little more to the ego but also reach for those stars because there is more out there than you realize. Sorry, didn't mean to be confusing with all this stuff, but your piece was a such a good example of the super-ego at work...beautifully at work.
