PTSD

PTSD

A Poem by Ainslie

With PTSD
Your head is never really "quiet"
It's always
Over analyzing
Whether it's people, places, or situations
It always happens
Are they going to hit me
Where is the nearest escape
Are they abusive
What if someone shoots this place up
And all you hear about
Are the military men and women
Who can't sleep at night
But you never hear about
The raped
The abused
Or the bullied
When suffering from PTSD
It's like having an invisible bubble around you
And if someone tries to sneak in
Your alarms are set off
And when positive physical contact is attempted
You back away saying
I'm sorry
As you are shaking
Because the event
Was so painful
That you refuse
Physical contact
In a way I guess you could say
We are all soldiers
Fighting the memories
Of battle between
You and the event
That set off your alarms

I love the thought behind this and it is true "We are all soldiers", whether we think so or not. One day, something will certainly make us put up our walls and set our alarms, to keep us prepared for anything or anyone surrounding us. It's not always the best thing, living our lives everyday, having to constantly look over our shoulders or be on guard about anyone approaching. We always assume the worst, that thought alone about the possibilities that could happen, keep us prepared and ready for the worst. PTSD is a terrible thing to experience, but we must admit that it exists. Those who serve who develop it are at great risk...worse than most would think and it's shattering to know that it gets so bad in which they must take a gun to their head in order to end the pain, the agony and struggle of having to endure nightmares and fear. I loved this! Great write.
