Are We Blinded?

Are We Blinded?

A Poem by Amanda J. S.
"

.....

"

Do we really look at one another?

“Of course.”

Do we?

Really?

“Yeah?”

I don’t think so.

If you come to think of it,

There is really no such thing as physical beauty.

A thing can’t be beautiful,

Without a mind to appreciate it.

But are we starting to grow unseeing?

Are we mocking the truth?

Are we simply not spotting the true beauty in this world?

The true beauty isn’t our looks,

I think,

But our minds.

Those who discover that beauty.

But then

What is ugly?

What have even prompted that way of thinking?

Ugly.

Why do we live with those kinds of minds?

Maybe…

Maybe it was the first Blinds,

Those with the minds in pain,

That invented that word,

That feeling…

And then later,

When they had convinced themselves,

They filled the Seeing’s minds with that same acid of ugly.

Maybe…

Are we all starting to lose our sight?

Because of that poisonous acid?

Are we all starting to overlook the beauty,

In our search for the made-up ugly?

The conversation into a poem was genius. It gave a more 3D look to it. Well written and done. Bravo :)

Amanda, a very good poem. Even better, the conversation with self that it compels a reader to undertake. I like the way that you've spaced it too; forcing the reader to chew over each line and swallow before taking another bite. Quite appropriate given the subject matter and topic. We should all practice a little formal dining before a gathering with philosophers. What are the attributes of beauty? When does the mind begin to construct this abstraction and why? I put it to you that it is based upon a Darwinian mandate that favors symmetry and proportion and color and odor and all of the other sensory conduits to the brain. Does the brain mandate an innate definition of beauty for a developing mind? Is there a cultural contribution and if so, how much?

Kudos! You are the philosopher-poet with this one. :)
