On the Shore

On the Shore

A Poem by AJ Douglas

I lent them my body
in a parasitic pact
within which to grow
each bone and organ
every finger and toe
nicking a slice of my pneuma
upon our separation
from their very first breath
they began building their boats
the days draining away
swiftly as water through a sieve
until eventually they set out
on their own to sail the sea
leaving me alone as I'd been before
on the sandy shore
