Opposite Here

Opposite Here

A Poem by Savannah Bailey
"

A journey down the broad and narrow way.

"
Opposite here, there exists a few,
Who have love and peace,
That seems never to cease.

Despite the trials and tribulation that may come,
They look forward to a place called home.

Opposite my path, there they sing and laugh,
And despite the persecution they receive day and night,
There is an everlasting joy in their eyes.

Sometimes they speak, those across the way.
But it would seem I am incapable of understanding what they say.

And once in a while, a passerby on this road,
Seems to disappear. To where? I don't know.

And oh how I am beginning to feel,
My fleeting pleasures aren't very real.

Suddenly someone was calling after me.
I turned, stunned, to understand his plea.

He said, "Come over here,"
"For your end is near."

I said, "I do not understand what you mean,"
"For there is no end that I have seen."

"Judgment is the end."
"It is just around the bend."
"If your nature does not change,"
"You have no hope of escaping your cage."

I cried, "Please, do tell me how I must be changed."
"I very much long to escape this never ending game."

"All your life you have idolized worldly pleasures,"
"Though they are a constant perishing treasure."

"You have become your Maker's enemy,"
"And now His wrath has become your destiny."

"Yet there is much hope despite your wretched state."
"Your God has made a way to clean your slate."

"For the Father sent His sinless Son,"
"To do that which must be done."

"He lived perfectly to then die on a tree,"
"Bearing our sins upon his spotless being."

"He did that which we never could,"
"To then pay our ransom with his own body and blood."

"Though he died,"
"He had not yet resigned."
"So he rose from the grave,"
"That some might be saved."

"Now you must forsake your wrongdoing,"
"And trust the Savior to change where you are going."

Just as my eyes were welling up with tears,
There appeared a path that erased my fears.

I walked its length to the other side,
To be greeted by the man who had proved to be my guide.

He hugged me with a smile bright as day,
And said, "Welcome, brother, for you have found the narrow way."

I learned that day that though I longed for my own pleasure,
It was only the enemy's deceptive measure.

I was blinded by my own sinful hear,
So that I couldn't find my way, though it wasn't far.

But the Savior who died,
Opened my eyes,
And now I am saved,
By the one who conquered the grave.

And only by His grace,
Despite my seemingly hopeless case.

And so I walk on in tears of joy,
For I have been made a new creation in Christ Jesus my Lord!
