Black Jack Drake

Black Jack Drake

A Poem by Tate Morgan
"

How wondrous the child like mind who dreamed of immortality He'd leave his mark upon this world that never knew morality

"
My rendition of Son Tate Graphite on canvas

My son was just a little boy

when he started saving treasure

To him it was each man's duty

to rule by bluster and measure

_______________________________

His heart was set on protection

of this hoard he'd kept in his bag

Filled with pride he was elated

a tough pirate who'd earned his swag

_______________________________

I'd watch as he would sail his sloop

off to some distant hallowed land

To wrest the natives of their loot

leaving their blood upon the sand

________________________________

His first-mate's name had been Jack Tar

from a story that we had read

He neither asked nor gave quarter

to the clansmen who now lay dead

________________________________

The sloop was built of a tree house

that we had hammered for three days

Not a bad deal for a pirate

with livelihood that always pays

________________________________

Many a coward met his end

on the deck of the Black Jack Drake

They begged for mercy every time

but were strung up for the men's sake

________________________________

How wondrous is the child's mind

who dreamed of immortality

He'd leave his mark upon the world

in so doing, he then touched me

________________________________

Little could he have known back then

the paths of dreams that he had paved

Were stored within his father's heart

where they were written down and saved

First day of College the reason we play those games as children to ready us for our life.

Author's Note

Tate Morgan
It is a boys dream to be the hellion that turns the world upside down.To then be the envy of all his fellows. And my son was no different. The ship the Black Jack Drake is named for the great Pirate Drake Cooper. Who holds the spirit of all children and the heart of this man. So cheers. Here's to far away lands and dreams coming true! All children share in the greatness of dreams.

Oh WOW Tate....you always manage to bring a tear to my eye with such beautiful words and song! I wish the same for my son, all his wonder and the fabulous young man he has become. I only hope he has the same confidence and hope that I have for him. I have stored, written and photographed each of those moments in my memories, diary and photos:) No one can take that away from me...they're my memories, my feelings, my today:) I remember singing Joni Mitchell's "Circle Game" to him as a lullaby when he was tiny. He remembers the chorus of that tune to this day. He doesn't understand and a tear pours down my check...he remembers the chorus, he remembers and I will never forget! This is beautiful!!!

Yeah, most young boys are hellraisers. I like the last stanza how the father observed and treasured those moments.

I can ooh and aah (all day) about how terrific this poem is....I chose instead to reflect and ponder my life, my children, my past and my future....and then oohed and aahed....Man, Tate, this was so well written with such a swashbuckler's pace, you hardly realize how effortlessly you found the rhyme scheme, the flow, the images....This would make for a great illustrated children's (or adult) book..My biggest regret is that I didn't write more about(or to) my children as they were growing up..I took photos instead..
Excellent write and rendering,
allen

Wonderful! So adventurous and jovial are the cores of children's hearts. I have fifteen nieces and nephews, and trust that I see and love it every day. You capture your son's tales in a perfect frame. To me the air of this poem smells like gummy bears and chocolate coins. I can hear the clink of buttons and the joyus war cries from an angelic throat. How beautiful! Little foot prints in our hearts or four leafed clovers. Truely, this piece is forever immortal.

Incredible! :) Wonderfully written. Boys are such a blessing, with their crooked smiles, devilish eyes, and boundless enthusiasm. :) You captured it all here Tate. :)
