A Poem by Tate Morgan
"

Where your heart becomes a cannon spit iron on the whale Follow him through perdition's flame then live to tell the tale

"

There is no ship quite like a book

it wanders as it may

Then takes us out amongst the waves

where gods and children play

To places far and wide we trek

chase hell's whale 'long the pole

Crest waves with Ahab na'er the cape

where gods may claim your soul

There your heart becomes a cannon

spit iron on the whale

Follow him through perdition's flame

and live to tell the tale

As the oarsmen all stagger back

cross themselves o’re the job

No hope to see another day

forlorn begin to sob

Imaginations running wild

wicked cruelty sublime
Chase your whale till you catch his tail

or till the end of time

Author's Note

Tate Morgan
Books are the windows to the world. But more than that they traverse time itself. As they take you to Melviles time of Moby Dick. They inspire. More than that they create the world of imagination. For Ahab the White Whale was nothing to be so idealised, rather it was "...all the subtle demonisms of life and thought; all evil, to crazy Ahab, were visibly personified, and made practically assailable in Moby-Dick. He piled upon the whale's white hump the sum of all the general rage and hate felt by his whole race from Adam down; and then, as if his chest had been a mortar, he burst his hot heart's shell upon it."
Thank You Allen Eddings for that rendition of the classic tale

I love this. Very visual and I can relate to the idea of books taking us places. Very beautifully worded and well said.

I think this poem is one of my favorites that you have written. Books can take us to places; that in reality we would never be able to go to. The flow of this poem is smooth and I love the whale in this tale spun in the poem.

This is an inspiration to crack open a novel.
It made me feel really free in a vast open world.
Nothing quite compares to the feeling of a great
book. You captured that feeling without a doubt.

I agree,

When I was younger I did not read at all, and I think that I missed out. I instead of reading would be outside playing and rough housing around. But when I got older is when I found what I had been missing. Like when an idea for a piece of written expression passes through my head, and I have to get it out or I can't find rest. It is the same with a good book, I get involved and it consumes me with the story and takes me to the place I am seeing displayed in diction upon the page. I love a good book, and I love a great piece of poetry, which you have crafted.

Nice Write!

I love the journey you take us on... so vivid and wild with life. I know the future of books stands at a crossroads.. libraries and bookstores struggling and closing... But I love books.. and see in your words why they're so vital. They strike deep into the heart.. deep into the mind.. more so than a movie can... They speak across time. So loved this, Tate!

*clapping* this is a little surreal as I just dreamt about someone burning books in a library, I was distraught! LOL...you poem to metered just to perfection! I so agree with you, a book can transport you to another time, place or dimension, we have been blessed with the power of imagination! One of the greatest gifts given to man!!! This is a favourite!
