One Father to Another

One Father to Another

A Poem by Tate Morgan
"

Behind those eyes then rose a tear the first blood I had ever drew From the depths of his tiny soul where innocence bid me adieu

"
Tate

Son Tate

Each day my son with thoughtful eyes

looked up to me through his laughter

Knowing I would be kind and wise

from that time and ever after

Once bitten from pain of divorce

I had shed teardrops of my own

From depths my boy had drug me back

he had never left me alone

Then came the moment I had feared

when my temper did hurt my son

Deep like the pain from my divorce

left me to ask, "what have I done"

Behind those eyes there rose a tear

the first blood I had ever drew

From the depths of his tiny soul

where innocence bid me adieu

Fearing grief would hinder his sleep

and not knowing what I should say

I looked to find him in slumber

there beside our picture he lay

Asleep in pain his eyes had closed

I felt my heart begin to moan

A sole tear lie upon his cheek

where I left a few of my own

So now whenever I am asked

to bless him with my permission

I think on what I lost that day

when I forced on him submission

Author's Note

Tate Morgan
Whenever my son asks for my permission I always ask myself now, who will it hurt if I say yes? If the answer is only myself I always say yes. A lesson I learned the hard way. It seems I learn best that way. I should say the reference in this poem to blood being spilled was metaphoric, not literal. In this case I had just lost quite a bit in the divorce and was distraught. Little Tate just wanted my attention. When he started nagging me I turned on him and launched a tirade his way. The look on his face as a tear arose from his soul was heart wrenching. Having never seen me so upset he was devastated. The barb launched his way rebounded off his innocence to strike me dead center in my own heart. I had broken both our hearts. If ever an experience wrung the very water from my soul, this was it!

This is such a tender, yet profound piece... I FEEL each word.. I feel each tear.. I feel the anguish.. oh my goodness.. I literally have chills right now.. I feel the depth at which you love this precious blessing.. It is pure, it is unconditional, and it is real.. This is my absolute favorite piece I have had the pleasure of reading on this site... A most heart-felt and emotional write Tate. I could feel your pain, and know how it is to regret causing suffering to one we love. We are always and forever learning little lessons along the way. It's what makes us human.

This poem tells such a sad story… It's horrible when innocence is lost, yet unfortunately, it's also a part of life.

That's a beautiful song, by the way. One of my favorites right now.

I'm usually a very critical reviewer, but for some reason I enjoyed this so much. Maybe it didn't make me happy, but it was as though it transcended emotion, was above it, not lacking. Fantastic.

wow - this one definitely tugged at the heart - great write! I would suggest that you maybe spend a little more time finding words, synonyms, etc, that help fit the rhyme pattern you establish in the beginning. you set us up nicely with a certain pacing that lends to comprehension, and then there are interruptions in places where they don't necessarily need to be. This will also allow you room to add interruptions on purpose, that will have a greater effect on the reader...a hiccup, more like. :o)

I did enjoy this piece.

The music playing fit just right, it added spice and flavor to the dreamy atmosphere. This poem has to be one of your best! The more personal and emotional it is though, I guess that's the case always. This one just...idk...made me search deep inside myself for something. When you can do that in your writing it's magical. Your design was intensely put together and beautifully divine.

That single tear, drew a different kind of blood, one that leaves a scar of a different kind on both the one who imposes and the one that submits. It seems a tiny piece, and yet they last like a tatto inside us. Words and wills imposed have drawn the blood of a differnt kind from me and I know my words and will imposed have done no less. I heard someone say tonight, "Regret is just the past cripling the future." So, on that note I release them and they release me to be free. Exquisite

Very nice and beautiful poem. Children are like rose petals, unaware of the coming storms which harm their lives. They are very soft and hopeful and always in search of love.
