My Father

My Father

A Poem by Ashley Kessel

My dad is the light at the end of the tunnel that pushes me to keep going

Even when I want to give up

He is the stars shinning in the dark night sky

My dad is always there for me when I fall on my knees, and can’t get up

He was there to pick me up

Brush me off

Look me in the eyes

Smile

And say, keep trying hunny bun

Life is only as hard as you make it

My dad makes me laugh, and smile

He was and is my everything

I never thought that my tears would stop flowing

Holding his hand tight in mine

I look at my dad laying limp in the hospital bed

I hear the last continuous beeping of the machine

The doctors turn the monitor away so I couldn’t see his heart flat line

My dad’s eye shoot open for just a minute

Tears stream from his bright blue eyes

Beating off his face hitting the soft white pillow

He gasps his last breathe

His hand I hold now limp

Soon turning cold

My tears finally stop streaming down my face

A sigh of relief waves over me

I take one last look at him and know that

He is no longer suffering

He is in a better place now

I lean in and kiss his forehead

Knowing I made the right choice

But

Feel my heart shatter into pieces
