Young Wife's First Goodbye WWII

Young Wife's First Goodbye WWII

A Poem by Laura E. Aranda
"

Part Two This is a sequel to Young Wife's First Goodbye WWI

"

My shadow cast reflections of mystery

Women of legacy gave me my history

There is strength in numbers, yes

But Lord, I feel so small against all the rest

Who's to say he will come back now

Under this worrisome load, my heart does bow

My mother, grandmother, they did survive

Knowing with hope and prayers their man would stay alive

My turn has come to release

Lord, all I ask is for sweet reassuring peace

Help me to take on this task

To wear this strong iron clad mask

Just bring my soldier home to my waiting arms

Keep him, I pray, from all War's deadliest harms

This is one of the best "mother or wife speaks of her son or husband" poems I've read! Love the line:
But Lord, I feel so small against all the rest

I reckon you have tapped into exactly how millions of women thought. In some ways they were more innocent and romantic times and I think your sonnet captures that. The fact you have chosen an old form also seems fitting.

an excellent sequel to your first piece M lady again your rhyming does you credit if a little forced here and there but again your meter is not consistent. You obviously have a natural talent for poetry.
This needs to be nourished if it is to reach full flowering

This is wonderful. Just as with the first one;this poem could have been written about what is going on today. I am sure this is exactly how the women/men are feeling today about their loved ones being deployed. You have and amazing grasp of this feeling. Well done.

Christine :-)

I like it! My father fought in WWII and I would not be here had he not survived the hell of war. I can only imagine the pain of seeing a husband leave for the battlefield. You expressed a woman's feelings well. Sharon
