The Boy

The Boy

A Chapter by Brad Baum

I look at the

Boy.

With bright blue eyes,

Sitting in the summer shade,

The crisp green blades cutting against his bare skin.

Legs crossed, eyes hidden

Beneath the brim of a baseball cap.

Silently staring at the sea of space

That stands between the two.

She stands on a rock, surrounded by

A green stream that forever draws her away.

And he?

He does nothing.

Sits motionless,

Longing for the girl

With the purple flower in her hair.

The girl he does not love,

No.

The idea of her, rather.

A flight of fancy. A pipe dream.

The notion, the possibility

Of love and sex and fear.

To take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife,

To have and to hold, in sickness and in health,

In good times and in bad,

For richer or poorer,

As long as they both shall live?

No.

He doesn’t.

And I will show him why.
