I OFTEN LOOK UP TO THE SKY

I OFTEN LOOK UP TO THE SKY

A Poem by Bhumika Rao
"

i leave it to your interpretations...

"
I often look up to the sky
gazing till where my eyes reach
a sea of tranquility
speckled with myriad colors of earth

"Oh! how wondrous it'd be"
craves the foolish heart of mine
mustn't it know i ain't got wings
to soar so high?

It's a free world, i assume
contrails of smoke uniting
with clouds so mighty
li'l specks of black gliding
across an expanse of serenity

It's a happy world, i assume
evening hues dancing along the
bright, blue skyline
as the pleasant beam of dusk
marries the placid sunshine

"wish the sky were home.."
ponders aloud the poor heart of mine
mustn't it know home can't be built
on blocks of lies?

Yet, i often look up to the sky
through the shattered glass of
my dusty, blood stained window

I get many images with this piece. I see a person in a dark place. A prisoner of sorts or a person in hiding during a violent time.
The pictures of the sky so powerful with meaning almost like the sky says the world is to be free and happy or meant to be its vastness and grandness almost demands it, but the prisoner narrates his/her dream to follow the calls of the earth but the reality is that there is no freedom or happiness just smoke, pain, and war. To follow the sky would be a lie for there is no happiness or freedom.
Very deep images come to mind. I feel a deep sadness intertwined with acceptance of reality.
Very powerful. Not sure what it was meant to mean but that is where it took me.

thanks a lot Tazeen!!
I found I really liked the cohesiveness of this poem. I could picture the sky the narrator was looking at. I actually don't like the "blood stained" part because I felt like it was good at being abrupt, but gave me so many questions. Maybe it was meant to be about perception and how it changes depending on where we are standing. Never mind, I think I like it that way.

Thanks for sharing with me! Have a great day!

Thanks Oakley!!! I'm glad you liked it :)
I was immediately drawn in by the title. Your poem didn't disappoint. You've done a great job of including many unusual, yet recognizable ways to describe sky-gazing ("contrails of smoke" . . . "lil specks of black") . . . my only tiny drawback is the line "bright blue skyline" (I think this could be described using something more imaginative than the everyday "bright blue"). I love the idea of wishing the sky were home. I love the contrast of "my dusty bloodstained window" which leaves a big gash in our idea of where this narrator is coming from.
