No Longer the Same Variance

No Longer the Same Variance

A Poem by Megan

I used to think
everyone
was their own
same self,
had their own
same differences,
walked their own
"less-traveled-by" path.
Used to think we were all
the same different,
the same variance.
That we all pursued
our own goals and
unique passions,
but that we were all

of equal difference.

And then I met you.

At first, you were just like the rest of them:
you went your own ways,
did your own things,
were your own person.

Your laugh resonated
the same in my heart as everyone's.
You were everyone's uniqueness,
a smear
blending the rest of the world
together before my eyes. Another shade of gray.

But, somewhere in knowing you,
you
began to
shine brighter
than everyone's light.

Your smear became a
distinct smudge,
the first place my eyes fixated on.

Perhaps
it was because
you noticed a brighter light in me
than everyone else.
Or maybe because,
in the midst of all the other lights you could've set your eyes upon,
you set your eyes on me.
Maybe
it was the comfort and encouragement
you espoused,
warming my life and brightening it.

Because
in your transfer of energy to me,
your light only grew brighter.

Your laughter
only became that much more potent
and special in my heart

your smudge that much more alluring
your same difference that much more...
different.

But,
looking at all these reasons I realize.
What really makes you the brightest light,
breaking the shadow of everyday existence,
 is you.
Your kindness,
your faith,
your care,
your quirks.

And ever since I have seen your light,
no one,
any longer,
is the same variance.
