Once upon a time there lived a rock; dull, gray, and stiff. But it had a core of hardened lava inside it, a part of it that was caring and passionate, warm and glowing. So other rocks called him Lava. Lava was around 1,000 years old, and his origins rooted back to an eruption of a great volcano 1,500 years ago. His core was made, and rock took form around him. So, thus Lava the rock was created.
Ever since that day Lava had been attending a school called Rocky Mountain, where he had been learning the ins (and outs) of being a rock. Going to that school, he had made a lot of friends, who also happened to be rocks. But Lava never really felt comfortable around them. It's not that he didn't like their company, it's just that he never really seemed to belong with them. He was just different, he always told himself. And so this same story had dragged on for a millennium: Lava would watch as his other friends rolled around having a good time together, as he just said in the same rock pile and wallowed. He felt he was ugly. He wasn't lustrous, like the other rocks were. He wasn't multicolored, or metallic. He wasn't one of those magnets, who could attract other rocks without even trying. He was just dull. Dull and gray. Except for one itty-bitty spot of deep amethyst on his bottom. But no one ever saw that part of him anyway. He wasn't up to showing them. It would never be enough anyway. So on he laid in the giant dirt-pile, practicing his rock skills. Until one day, contrary to his belief that nothing would ever change, there came an addition to Rocky Mountain School of Rocks (Rocky Mountain for short). It was a beautiful amethyst stone, lustrous and all. Lava wondered with all his might what a gem like that would be doing at Rocky Mountain. Only, he didn't put his wonder into action and roll to her and ask. For one, he was too shy. For two, he was just a rock. No gem of a stone would want to be with a dull, gray rock anyway. Even if he did have some amethyst in him..So he sat. Right where he always did. Convincing himself he didn't have a shot in the Rock World. But it still didn't stop him from wondering things...Like what was her name? What was she doing here? She really didn't belong... Lava thought and thought, but finally shrugged to himself. There was no use. All this thinking was tuckering him out. He dozed off, his last thought of amethyst as his consciousness faded into darkness. He woke with a start, and if rocks could blush, Lava would be red as a brick. The amethyst stone was laying right next to him. Him of all people. He gazed at her, her light, faded purple color so beautiful to him. "Lava. I've finally found you!" She whispered happily into the air. "Hmn?" He wondered back. She knocked into him and rolled him over, exposing the itty-bitty spot of amethyst on him. "That's the mark of the rock I'm supposed to be with. Look, I have one too, one that's gray like you." The amethyst stone rolled over, revealing an itty-bitty spot of rock in her. "But I don't understand. This can't be right. You're...you're a gem! I'm just..just a rock. A dull, boring rock. You are supposed to be with someone perfect, like you. Not a dull thing like me." Lava rolled away from the amethyst, saddened by the realization that this was the truth. But the amethyst only rolled right back into him. "Lava, I'm not a perfect gem. But you're perfect to me. And underneath, I know you have a core of passion and warmth. Something that no other rock is filled with. Because you're unique. And you know what?" "What?" "I love you for who you are. Because no one can ever come close to the way you shine." "B-b-but I don't shine. I'm dull. Not pretty like you." "You shine to me, Lava, you shine to me." -------- So Lava and the amethyst stone, whose name Lava soon discovered was Lavender, stayed side by side for many millenniums afterwards. And Lava learned one heck of a lesson that day. That beauty is all relative. And beauty, is in the eyes of the beholder. © 2011 MeganFeatured Review
