This Disease

This Disease

A Poem by Brandon Mathis

You’re like a disease

That’s trying to overcome me

Steal everything that I believe

Close my eyes so that I can’t see

Cover my mouth so I can’t breathe

You’re starting to sink in

Making me dread my life till the end

And you haven’t started to begin

You are the greatest sin

I push it back but you still try to get in

You’re penning me up on a wall

A disease is what you are called

A slow knife that begins to saw

Can I stand up if I fall?

Or do you take all that I am

Making me less of a man

Looking through the glass

My words are so sad

But this disease is so glad

Taking my last breath as I gasp

Leaving me with just half

Floating through the smoke like ash

Withering away with no life

This disease is like a fire

It starts to burn me on the inside

There’s nowhere to run or hide

My clock finally runs out of time

I tried so hard but you still took away my heart

Powerful work...I like the first two lines, the idea of a disease "overcoming" you is like reverse psychology...I can't explain it so I don't know if that makes sense...but again, a great poem.
