With One Breathe

With One Breathe

A Poem by Brandon Mathis

We live and we are lost

Close my eyes as it all goes by

Floating like ash

As the wind

Carries me farther

As the ground

I’m buried in gets harder

The world around me

Gets a little colder

My soul

Gets a little older

All that I know

Begins to shatter

An earthquake

Where no one is saved

A truth

That is used

Another lie

To make you feel alive

Another word

For you to burn

Going up in smoke

This life

With no hope

No soul

Nowhere to go

Fading as a ghost

A shallow hole

With no heart

To call my own

With one breathe

Lay me to rest

On the grave

Plant a life

With no name

But plenty of mistakes

So much pain

So much shame

Getting confused

With this truth

You words abuse me

With the lies you speak

The truth is left behind

Thrown to the shadows

With no light

Struck by lighting

As it burns

The cold embers

The smoke rises

To all your lies

With no truth

Then how would you know what’s right
