Images of D-Day

Images of D-Day

A Poem by Phil Sanders
"

My expression of what they must have felt as the invasion started 0n 6th June 1944

"

Water lapping round the hull

In the false and silent lull
Phoney, peaceful, graceful waves
Just before the dawning day
Flash of lightning across the sky
Deadly, crackling lullaby …
Of tracer ripping through the air
Fatal metal … without care
Tears away the flimsy peace
Everyone so ill at ease
Shattering sounds of earthly hate
All a tremble … What’s our fate?
Plunging through the waves of fear
Fleeting thoughts of those so dear
Feet on terra firma now
Will I once more hold the plough?
Or will I cease to be right here …….
On the sands …. With freedom near

What a great capture of what must have been soldiers experiences...the rhythm and rhyme is perfect.
As one who simply can't write a rhyme (at least I haven't yet, and I am over 50 LOL!) I am particularly impressed by your usage of the correct words and that they RHYME. Kudos! I just recently wrote an anti-war poem, I'll send you a read request and you can take a look at it if you'd like.

The flow here is perfect Phil - the imagery spot on. Any of those who experienced this moment in time know exactly what you are saying and the rest of us get a good feel of how it was.

Nothing more need to be said here

a perfect write.

Cheers

I couldn't imagine what they were feeling that day, but I don't imagine you are far off. Great word usage. I particularly like this one:

Or will I cease to be right here .On the sands . With freedom near

What a clever way to say "I am ready to die for freedom, for my country, and at the time, the free world."

Loved it.

I cannot even begin to imagine the horrors of not knowing what even the next second may bring...sounds of terror...the pain...alas some deaths. My heart ached reading this...vivid imagery~ Powerful spill!

Just reading this pains me- I cannot begin to understand the horror, the pain and the fear. Yet I know how brave these warriors were. I'm glad you remembered them, we all need to think about them.
Excellent writing. :+)

Very well written, Phil!

Excellent imagery here with an ode to that which should not be forgotten. Amazing the power of words, that by posting this wonderful piece you have caused all that read it to stop and remember that day.
Bravo!

Great piece. Literature of war seems to have greatly diminished since the Great Wars, and I am happy to see a partial return. As much as I dislike war, I must admit that I also like the literature of war. Go figure.

"Feet on terra firma now" Terror firma is more like it! Way to capture the rivioting experience of an amphibeous assault. War sux!
