The Great Nowhere

The Great Nowhere

A Poem by Brandy Alexander

She thinks to herself, ‘I’d like to visit Rome’,

From within her castle made of paneling.

Her eyes gaze high at the ancient Cathedral Dome

Somewhere beyond the old leaky ceiling.

There’s life out there, she knew it somehow,

She saw it once at an abandoned Drive-Inn Theater.

And if it was there then, why can’t it be now?

And is that hope swirling or last night’s dinner?

She had a suitor back then blind to her deformity,

He called her pretty and said that he never lies.

From the sofa, she still feels the seat of that SS Galaxie,

And the kiss she’ll remember at the moment she dies.

Now she’s riding on a Vespa upon a cobbled street

With sunlight's radiance playing tag in her hair.

She keeps her heart on the music playing an invisible beat,

'Less be swallowed by the great nowhere.

The first two stanzas are fantastically written - clear, fluid, poetically sublime, with even a suitable touch of humour. But the last two, despite their great imagery and juicy lines extend the musicality a little too much to the point where certain lines end up being mouthfuls. This poem is far from being remotely bad in any way else! It's virtually divine on many levels! It's only flaw is in the musicality of those last two stanzas....some pruning, I advise, is in order. Well done overall!
