Unrequited

Unrequited

A Poem by Joel K
"

For my first love...

"

Unrequited

The weight presses in,

Enveloped, surrounded,

Encumbered by the sound,

The pressing sound of silence.

Why did you push me away?

Why couldn’t you love me?

I did everything right;

Where did we go wrong?

I loved you with all I had,

I still don’t understand.

Why does it feel like you left me,

When I’m the one who ended it?

Unrequited love,

A pain that none should face.

You said you loved me;

You told me you loved me,

But you didn’t love me.

I could see it in your eyes;

I could feel it in your embrace;

It’s in your every action.

You don’t love me.

You love how I make you feel.

You love that I’m willing to give,

To sacrifice anything.

I’d do anything for you,

But I couldn’t stay,

Not like that, it was just too much.

Too much to bear, loving yet unloved.

I gave and gave and gave,

I gave you all I had,

And received nothing,

Nothing more than heartache,

Nothing more than pain.

Why now? It’s been four months.

Why all of a sudden do I feel like I’m breaking?

I’m crushed under the weight of my sorrow.

Sorrow that wasn’t there yesterday.

Pain that will be here tomorrow.

But you won’t be here,

You won’t be mine,

Because you didn’t love me,

And I couldn’t stay.
