The Mask

A poem about hiding how you feel so you can look 'tough' and how hard it really is.

Blank expression
No feelings to show...
Look down deeper
There's more to it than you know

Eyes empty
Nothing left to give...
Examine them closely
Nothing there still lives

How could a stare
Gently tear away
The mask over my soul
I had sewn so complex

The cut inside
You won't let them see
Unravelling the threads
The walls have been shot down
Now watch me crumble

Live in the lie
Please be my guide
Show me my true home
That you have ripped in two

Eyes empty
No emotions to give...
Yet, examine them closely
You'd hate to admit
Something there still lives

I loved the message behind this one Casey. The masks people hide behind to keep their true selves in the dark, keeping the world from seeing their flaws and dark pasts. Sometimes we just have to break free and let go of all that, knowing something good will come from it in the end and we can tear that mask right off. Nicely penned!

Cryptic or very optimistic, depending on what you perceive is lying in wait behind dead eyes (the wrath restrained or the hope for something better?). Neatly penned, you speak of emptiness and portray it finely.
